Summary
This paper reviews the literature on behaviourally oriented parent-training programs where the children involved are mentally retarded. Attention is given to the variety of behavioural problems encountered, in both case studies and group programs. Important issues in mental retardation and parent training are examined in the light of the studies reviewed. It is suggested that parent training procedures with retarded children have been successful, at least in the short term, and that they are similar to those used with non-retarded children.
