Abstract

Over a five year period, 38 mentally slow or mildly retarded young men employed at an industrial work centre for handicapped persons have been given additional training in woodwork and cabinet making. attending special classes for one year that have been similar to those for first-year apprentices. The outcome of this venture has been evaluated by comparing the performance of special trainees in end-of-year tests with that of normal first-year apprentices, by seeking the opinions of instructors and trainees involved about changes in general work and social skills, and by following the progress of trainees subsequent to their participation in the scheme. On test pieces, most special trainees have produced work of a satisfactory quality, while taking significantly longer than first-year apprentices to complete the test. A quarter of those completing this training have gone on to enter a normal apprenticeship, supported by special arrangements for remedial education. The consensus of opinion among instructors and trainees participating is that the scheme has proved successful, despite some problems that have arisen regarding selection, continuing participation, and the subsequent employment of trainees.
