Abstract
Intervention to treat self-injurious behaviour (SIB) in a fourteen-year-old female with mental retardation, living in a large institution is reported The intervention program was based on hypotheses generated from a sequence analysis and direct observation of the subject Intervention involved contingent restraint, reinforcement of alternative behaviours, and a change to the activities of the subject's school day. A clinically significant reduction in SIB in both the subject's living Unit and school was associated with the intervention program. This reduction was maintained at eight-month follow-up.
