Abstract
Considering the current widespread interest in Psycholinguistics, it may be surprising to note that one of the earliest formal references to the term “psycholinguistics”, at least in its un-hyphenated form, was made as long ago as 1945. It was, however, some fourteen years ago that a symposium was held in America to bring together for the first time Psychologists, Linguists and Anthropologists, in an initial attempt to outline the broad problem areas in language research, and to consider which approaches might prove to be the most fruitful (Osgood and Sebeok, 1965).
