Osteoporosis and the aging male

Pages 223-227 | Published online: 06 Jul 2009

Abstract

Osteoporosis is a major health concern in aging men. The risk of osteoporotic fracture, particularly of the hip, is increasing in men as life expectancy increases, and the health and economic costs in the future will be high. Research on the pathogenetic mechanisms of osteoporosis in men is reviewed as well as the role of systemic hormones. The usefulness of bone mineral density measurements and other diagnostic methods in screening for osteoporosis and the effectiveness of available treatments are discussed. The need for further research in this field is emphasized.
