Effects of Strontium Ions on Heart Muscle: II. Influence on Excitability, Conduction and Potassium Efflux

Pages 461-475 | Received 06 Apr 1966, Published online: 27 Sep 2008

Abstract

The influence of substitution of extracellular Ca by Sr on excitability and conduction in papillary muscles, isolated hearts of rats and frogs and isolated auricles of cats and rabbits was studied. K efflux was measured in cat papillary muscles. Strontium was found to depress the spontaneous frequency, direct excitability and conduction velocity. Absolute and effective refractory periods were prolonged and the K efflux in stimulated papillary muscles was increased.
