Delrin as Implant Material for Valve Occluders

Pages 103-107 | Published online: 12 Jul 2009

Abstract

Four aortic and two mitral Björk-Shiley tilting disc -valves were studied after 0.5 to 2.75 years of in-vivo implantation. All Delrin discs exhibited excellent bio-compatibility and life expectancies well in excess of 50 years. Based on this study, it is concluded that Delrin is an acceptable material for a heart valve occluder if appropriate processing and compensation is made to allow for its propensity to absorb moisture. No discolouration, degradation or variance was experienced.
