Abstract

This paper describes a feasibility study of the methods of using an on-line computer system to facilitate drug-handling within an acute medical ward. A small CTL Modular 1 computer was used with terminals in the ward and the pharmacy.

A comparison of the manual and computer systems is made using a number of criteria including (1) the accuracy of prescribing and administration of medicines, (2) the adequacy of the pharmacy-ward drug distribution and (3) the nursing work load. This shows that the computer system has a number of inherent advantages which justifies further work in its application to drug-handling procedures in hospital.
