Living in ecstasy: applying the normalization thesis to ecstasy use in Canada

Pages 405-409 | Received 27 May 2013, Accepted 29 Aug 2013, Published online: 01 Oct 2013

Abstract

This study seeks to determine the extent to which ecstasy use in Canada has been normalized. Drawing from the 2004 Canadian Addiction Survey, this study tests whether gender, education and economic status remain relevant predictors of ecstasy use. The results show general support for the theory that the use of ecstasy is becoming normalized in Canadian society. Additional research should test the other features of the normalization thesis to truly understand its applicability to ecstasy use in Canada.
