Abstract
The relevance of substance use with respect to the assessment of dangerousness in mentally ill patients is gaining recognition among health professionals. This paper highlights some of the key difficulties in achieving accurate assessment of substance use in detained mentally ill patients and identifies a range of possible relationships that can exist between substance use and potential risks presented by the patient.
