The working life of homeless street addicts

Pages 10-15 | Published online: 12 Jul 2009

Abstract

An in-depth study of 31 male homeless street addicts found that a majority work to sustain an income. Although they participate in a range of jobs, work is limited and narrowly defined due to substance abuse. Additional barriers to employment include competency levels, work histories and patterns, and their larger environment. Throughout the study, the men assessed the meaning of work in their lives and their work experiences, providing insight to overcoming employment barriers.
