Non-invasive body contouring approaches promise to be one of the largest cosmetic areas of interest over the next decade. The first four articles in this edition of the Journal specifically deal with such an approach. Pancar Yuksel evaluates the effects of platelet rich plasma (PRP on the skin). Ryu looks at the clinical efficacy of cryolipolysis whereas de la Casa Almeida evaluates radio-frequency treatment for cellulite reduction. In the last of this series, Gold evaluates the use of micro-focused ultrasound to lift and tighten lax knee skin.

Hyperhidrosis has become a new area of interest among aesthetic physicians. With that in mind, Mordon analyzes the new treatment techniques for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis. Below hyperhidrosis a recent area of interest; but the concept of combining topical treatments with energy-based devices promises to be one of the most exciting areas of aesthetic research over the next 5 years. With that in mind, my research group looked at the complimentary clinical effects of a topical tightening agent in conjunction with radiofrequency treatments. After this study, Latifi evaluated the excimer laser and tacrolimus in the treatment of vitiligo.

With all treatments there can be complications. Grippaudo reviews not only the diagnosis of, but also the treatment of, filler complications. Orringer examines gender-based differences in pain tolerance. Lastly, Cohen looks at appropriate scientific skepticism that is warranted by all of us, who evaluate the studies.

Enjoy!
