Response from Rothwell and Boyd

We thank Cesarani, Minoia, Pigatto and Guzzi for sharing their experience of removing mercury fillings ‘en bloc’ and for references to their work regarding dental amalgam and neurotological disorders. We agree that is important to determine whether hearing loss due to amalgam is cochlear and/or neurological in nature and also whether the effects are reversible and/or permanent.
