The Influence of Electric Fields on Human Subjects

Abstract

Overhead powerlines produce electromagnetic fields in the environment, thereby raising a question concerning the impact on exposed subjects. We studied the effect of power-frequency electric fields and currents on human reaction time to audio and visual cues. Reaction times for both stimuli were lengthened by exposure to 13 kV/m, 50 Hz. Similar effects were observed following application of 160 µA, 50 Hz.
