Accidental Ingestion of Podophyllum

Pages 973-977 | Published online: 25 Sep 2008

Abstract

Recently, Podophyllum in tincture of benzoin has found wide spaced usage in the treatment of condyloma accuminata. There have been several reports of its toxicity in the literature, but there is a paucity of information in textbooks concerning its toxicity. A case of poisoning as a result of accidental ingestion of Podophyllum is presented. The resulting toxic effects manifested as an initial severe central nervous system effect followed by an extended period of severe peripheral neuropathy. Common symptoms encountered are vomiting, respiratory stimulation, ataxia, and coma. Aggressive general support measures should be employed as necessary, such as IV therapy and respiratory support.
