Abstract

Recent advances in attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR/FT-IR) spectroscopy instrumentation make it feasible to apply this methodology more widely to the testing of cosmetic ingredients and products. Using a Perkin-Elmer Model 1600 FT-IR spectrophotometer, we evaluated several sunscreen components and formulations. Sunscreens with ethylhexyl-p-methoxycinnamate, octyl PABA, and oxybenzone resulted in identifiable absorbance peaks. The data showed good reproducibility and sensitivity within and among individuals tested. Vehicle components did not appear to interfere with identification of the active ingredients. Early studies using tape stripping and water immersion suggest that ATR/FT-IR spectroscopy may be useful in evaluating epidermal penetration and water resistance of sunscreen formulations.
