Abstract
The principles of the self-help organization, Alcoholics Anonymous, are in part derived from philosophical pragmatism. Especially, unconditional surrender to the problem of alcohol and faith in a higher power to overcome the problem are well rooted in pragmatic philosophy. Moreover, to stabilize the recovery process AA uses pragmatic means: perseverance, group consensus and usefulness. Finally, the “success” of AA as well as the justification of the AA programme in comparison with science-based treatment are discussed.
