The illustration of anatomical atlases during the hand-press era

Pages 90-96 | Published online: 10 Jul 2009

Abstract

This paper is an edited version of an illustrated talk delivered at the IMBI 19th Annual Conference, held at York, 1986. It considers the mechanical reprographic techniques which were available to printers during the hand-press era (15th-19th centuries). The development and merits of the technical processes are discussed and illustrated by examples from contemporary anatomical atlases.
