Abstract

Forty-one children aged between 5;0 and 9;0 years participated in a communication task. During this task an adult-experimenter created communication failures. These communication failures were indicated by utilising one of four common clarification requests. The clarification request utilised by the adult was systematically altered to determine each clarification requests' differential effect on children's responses. Each clarification request was found to yield a distinct individual response pattern.
