The Unrealized Potential of the ‘Speech Therapist’ in Managing the Autistic Individual

Abstract

This article reviews some of the issues associated with the question, “What could a speech therapist offer the autistic individual?” It proposes six areas of knowledge and skill which are crucial to working successfully with the nonverbal and verbal autistic individual. This article could serve as a guideline to administrators, parents and ‘speech therapists' who work with autistic individuals.
