Abstract

A method of teaching formal communication skills to severely mentally retarded autistic children is described and illustrated with two case studies. The programme employed graphic symbols and manual signs. One outcome of the programme was to suggest that the autistic children involved found the use of symbols in communication easier than the acquisition of signs. The strengths and weaknesses of the programme are discussed.
