Pages 1-5 | Published online: 02 Jan 2015

Abstract

The age distribution of children with complement-fixing (CF) antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV) was studied in 3 014 hospital-admitted patients and outpatients. At the age of 7–9 months the proportion of seropositive patients had increased to 34% indicating a recent period of CMV infection. From urinary samples of 577 other children CMV could be isolated in 35% of children in the age of 5–6 months and a maximum frequency of 40% was observed in the age of 19–24 months. 3% of neonates excreted virus; of these 4 out of 5 had high titres of CF antibody. The titres declined during the first months of life.
