Prognostically Unfavourable Factors in Septicaemia

Pages 37-41 | Published online: 02 Jan 2015

Abstract

Since opinions differ on the treatment of complicated cases of septicaemia (intravascular coagulation, shock) it was considered desirable to be able to judge the prognosis early in the disease. For this purpose 88 cases of septicaemia not acquired in hospital were studied for prognostically unfavourable factors. A prognostic score system is suggested. According to this unfavourable factors are: 1) age ≥ 60 years, 2) age ≥ 70 years, 3) suppressed level of wakefulness, 4) tachypnoea, 5) peripheral circulatory insufficiency, and 6) petechiae and/or cutaneous bleedings. In the patient group studied a score of 3 or more implied a pessimistic prognosis.
