Transferable Multiple Drug Resistance of Shigella Strains Isolated in Sweden

Pages 221-227 | Published online: 02 Jan 2015

Abstract

The resistance patterns and the transfer frequency of drug resistance in 94 Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei strains, isolated in Sweden during 1970 from faecal specimens, were investigated. 60% of the strains appeared to be resistant to one or more drugs tested: 56% to sulphonamide, 27% to tetracycline, 18% to chloramphenicol, 14% to ampicillin and 3% to neomycin and kanamycin. Resistance to nitrofurantoin and gentamicin was not observed. A variety of different resistance patterns was found. 25 of 32 multiply drug-resistant shigella strains were able to transfer at least part of their resistance markers to Escherichia coli during mixed cultivation. The frequency of transfer of resistance factors was found to differ markedly among donor strains. The resistance levels of the cells which received R factors depended on the donor strain and the type of resistance determinants.
