The Effect of Doxycycline on Renal Function in Patients with Advanced Renal Insufficiency

Abstract

10 patients with advanced renal failure were given doxycycline 200 mg followed by 100 mg every 24 hours for 6 days. Glomerular filtration rate and effective renal plasma flow were measured before and after treatment with doxycycline. Serum concentrations of active doxycycline were determined twice daily during the treatment period. Blood urea, serum creatinine concentration, glomerular filtration rate and effective renal plasma flow did not change during doxycycline therapy There was no accumulation of the drug in serum. The individual serum levels of doxycycline varied considerably, but there was no correlation between drug concentration and the degree of renal failure. The present study supports earlier works claiming that treatment with doxycycline does not lead to deterioration of renal function or drug accumulation even in advanced renal failure.
