Abstract
A previously healthy 50-year-old man fell ill with pyrexia, dysphagia, and cervical swelling. Inability to swallow food, rapidly progressing laryngeal obstruction and prostration developed within a few hours. Laryngoscopy revealed a cherry-red swollen epiglottis. Haemophilus parainfluenzae was isolated in 3 blood cultures. Treatment with cephalothin, gentamicin, and dexamethasone was effective. Acute epiglottitis due to H. parainfluenzae has not previously been reported.
