Abstract
Serum samples of 19 track-finders bled in 1970 and 311 track-finders bled in 1973 were examined for hepatitis B antigen (HBAg) and antibody (HBAb) with a radioimmunoassay method with high sensitivity. If the competition career started before 1967, the percentage of HBAb-positive sera was high in male track-finders. Preventive measures against hepatitis were introduced in 1967, and men who started track-finding after that time exhibited a low percentage of HBAb. The percentage of HBAg- and HBAb-sera among female track-finders was low. These serological data are in good agreement with the sex difference in disease incidence. The positive effect of the introduction of preventive measures is confirmed serologically.
