Abstract

A simple and rapid diagnostic immunofluorescent staining technique for herpesvirus hominis (HVH) has been applied in 39 cases of clinically diagnosed herpes simplex or herpes zoster. Demonstration of HVH in cells removed by scraping could be done within 3 hours by fluorescent staining, and in 3 days, on an average, by isolation in cell culture. Agreement between the results obtained by fluorescent staining and isolation in cell culture was more than 90%. Typing of the isolated HVH strains by immunofluorescent technique and micro-neutralization showed complete correlation.
