Reaction between Rheumatoid Sera and Erythrocytes Sensitized with Guinea Pig Antibody

Summary

Antisera were obtained from guinea pigs by immunization with sheep erythrocytes. Sheep erythrocytes sensitized by subagglutinating amounts of such antisera were agglutinated by sera of patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Four-hundred and twenty-eight human sera were used for comparison of results obtained with this test and the traditional test using rabbit antiserum for sensitization of sheep erythrocytes. A good agreement was observed. This, however, was the case only at relatively strong sensitization of the sheep erythrocytes. At weaker sensitization the test with rabbit antiserum was considerably more sensitive than the test with guinea pig antiserum.

Résumé

Les auteurs ont obtenu des antiserums de cobayes par immunisation au moyen d'érythrocytes de moutons. Des érythrocytes de mouton sensibilisés par des quantités subagglutinantes de tels antisérums ont été agglutinés par les sérums de malades souffrant de polyarthrite chronique évolutive. Afin de comparer les résultats obtenus avec ce test et avec le test conventionnel utilisant l'antisérum de lapin pour la sensibilisation des érythrocytes de mouton, on a employé 428 sérums humains. On a constaté un bon accord. Toutefois, ceci a été seulement le cas lors d'une sensibilisation relativement forte des érythrocytes de mouton. En cas de sensibilisation plus faible le test avec l'antisérum de lapin fut beaucoup plus sensible que celui utilisant l'antisérum de cobaye.

Zusammenfassung

Antisera wurden von Meerschweinchen durch Immunisierung mit Schaferythrocyten erhalten. Die durch subagglutinierende Mengen von solchen Antisera sensibilisierte Schaferythrocyten wurden von Polyarthritis Chronica Sera agglutiniert. 428 menschliche Sera wurden mit diesem Test und mit dem konventionellen Test (Schaferythrocyten sensibilisiert mit Kaninchenantiserum) untersucht. Gute Uebereinstimmung wurde festgestellt wenn die Schaferythrocyten verhältnismässig stark sensibilisiert worden waren. Bei schwächerer Sensibilisierung war der Test mit Kaninchenantiserum viel empfindlicher als der Test mit Meerschweinchenantiserum.
