Quantitative Investigations on the Composition of Acute Inflammatory Edema

Summary

1. A method for determining quantitatively the various constituents of acute inflammatory edema in mice is described.

2. By this method the “genuine edema”, i. e. the plasma filtrate, is examined in vivo and in situ.

3. Control studies confirm the reliability of the method.

4. The concentrations of fatfree solids, hexosamine, hydroxyproline, sodium, chloride and potassium were determined in xylene- and in heatprovoked edema 15 minutes after initiation of the inflammatory process.

5. The results show that the acute inflammatory edema is a bulk filtrate of plasma.

Résumé

1° Les auteurs décrivent une méthode pour la détermination quantitative des différents éléments constituants de l'œdème inflammatoire aigu chez des souris.

2° Par cette méthode “l'œdème véritable” c.à-d. le filtrat de plasma est examiné in vivo et in situ.

3° Des examens de contrôle confirment l'efficacité de la méthode.

4° Les concentrations de solides exempts de graisse, d'hexosamine, d'hydroxyproline, de sodium, de chlorure et de potassium sont déterminées dans l'œdème provoqué par le xyléne et la chaleur 15 minutes après l'initiation du processus inflammatoire.

5° Les résultats démontrent que l'œdème inflammatoire est un filtrat massif de plasma.

Zusammenfassung

1. Eine Methode für die quantitative Bestimmung der verschiedenen Elemente von akutem, entzündlichem ödem bei Ratten, wird beschrieben.

2. “Das genuine Ödem”, d. h. das Plasmafiltrat wird in vivo und in situ studiert.

3. Kontrolluntersuchungen haben die Zuverlässigkeit der Methode bestätigt.

4. Die Konzentration von fettfreien festen Körperchen, Hexosamin, Hydroxyprolin, Natrium, Chloriden und Kalium wurde in xylol- und wärmeprovozierten Ödemen bestimmt, und zwar 15 Minuten nach Beginn des entzündlichen Vorganges.

5. Die Ergebnisse erweisen, dass das akute entzündliche Ödem ein Flocken-Filtrat von Plasma ist.
