Abstract
In this study, the author evaluated Brazilian students' environmental perceptions of Cerrado (savanna-like vegetation). The author administered tests of knowledge and perception of the Cerrado biome's wildlife to students of different social classes. The students (age range: 11-17 years) generally exhibited low identification with the region, and few differences were observed among the appraised groups. Students who had more contact with the region's natural landscapes showed greater affection for it. The results are discussed in context of the focus on the Cerrado in schools and in textbooks and of the students' perceptions of the region. The author also discusses the role of schools in efforts to conserve the Cerrado.
