Symposium: Drifting Apart from Birth to Adulthood: How to Manage Exotropia

Exotropia Treatment: Does Age Matter?

, M.D.
Pages 14-17 | Published online: 22 Dec 2017

Abstract

Many factors affect the reported outcomes of strabismus surgery for exotropia. The effect of age on outcome was evaluated by a review of large studies addressing the influence of multiple variables, including age, on surgical outcome. These retrospective studies have varied conclusions, often confounded by other variables. Surgery should be performed prior to intermittent exotropia becoming constant, but a precise age at which surgery should be performed cannot be recommended.
