On the cumulus convection above an isolated source of heat

Pages 34-44 | Received 18 Oct 1965, Published online: 15 Dec 2016

Abstract

A new theory on the development of convective clouds in conditionally unstable atmosphere is presented. The main idea lies in investigating the net buoyancy of cloud and undercloud air, treated as a thermally inhomogeneous body of finite dimensions. Quantitative calculations are given for a simplified model, and considerations of their applicability are included.
