Temperature microstructure on the Bermuda slope with application to the mean flow

Abstract

The oceanic conditions in the immediate vicinity of Bermuda have been studied with hydrographic data, parachute drogues, and moored current meters. The island was found to be a source of temperature and salinity microstructure with a marked azimuthal asymmetry. On one cruise, the area of most intense mixing was associated with a very strong jet across the north shore of Bermuda. The jet is depicted by the very marked deepening of the isotherms of the main thermocline as the island is approached from the north. Overall, the mean flow pattern has been determined. Very near-shore very violent time dependent motions were observed which may be associated with the step structure on the T and S curves.
