Abstract
A better understandning of the global carbon cycle is of central importance in predicting global change, in particular the impact of increasing fossil fuel use and deforestation on the atmospheric CO2 concentration. During the last 10 years, scientists from all over the world have periodically met to discuss recent development in the field of the global carbon cycle. This special issue is dedicated to the contribution presented at the Third International Conference on Analysis and Evaluation of Atmospheric CO2 Data, Present and Past, wich was held at Hinterzarten, Germany, 16-20 October 1989.
