Domestic violence exacts a terrible human toll in terms of both suffering and death. Physicians are often directly in contact with victims and family members at a time when early and successful intervention is possible. Prompt recognition of the likelihood of abuse, familiarity with reporting procedures, appropriate referrals to community resources, and close follow-up are essentials of comprehensive management.
