In recent years, screening for prostate cancer has become an area of considerable controversy. Some prominent groups support mass screening of asymptomatic men, while others do not. Primary care physicians have a critical role in the initiation of screening, and it is essential for them to be familiar with the major issues. In this review, the authors highlight some of the key factors that both physicians and patients should consider when embarking on a plan for screening. They conclude with a discussion of management when screening results are abnormal.
