Pathologic disorders of the external ear, although common, can be debilitating and even life-threatening. Infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic diseases require early detection and appropriate treatment. The authors offer guidelines to assist the primary care physician in identifying common and more serious disorders, in determining the appropriate therapy, and in recognizing situations that warrant referral.
