Perhaps no other physician activity has greater impact in preventing morbidity and mortality than does routine vaccination. Advances in biotechnology have contributed both new vaccines against pathogens for which vaccines were not previously available and improved vaccines to replace older ones. The numerous methods used to develop vaccines have resulted in licensure of many different commercial products with significant as well as subtle differences. Drs Conrad and Jenson describe these differences in regard to four new vaccines, focusing on their most appropriate use.
