Few areas of practice have been so quickly and thoroughly revolutionized by a single finding as has management of peptic ulcer disease by the 1982 discovery that Helicobacter pylori infection and antral gastritis are strongly related. Empirical therapy for the infection is not recommended; the authors compare several methods of establishing the diagnosis before starting therapy. They also discuss currently used combinations of drugs and who should receive them.
