Nicotine has both acute and long-term effects on the cardiovascular system that contribute to the development of hypertension and increase the risk of myocardial infarction, sudden death, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke. Because patients say that advice from their personal physician is an important motivating factor in quitting smoking, their regular appointments should be used as opportunities to encourage cessation. In this article, Drs Kochar and Bindra review the multifaceted problems of smoking and hypertension.
