It is no secret that end-stage renal disease from any cause is a costly and debilitating condition. The good news is that in many patients with renal injury, appropriate glycemic control, antihypertensive therapy, and modifications in lifestyle can delay renal failure. In this article, Drs Hood and Gennari recommend specific pharmacologic and dietary measures that can prevent or slow the progression of renal disease, and they emphasize the role of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors in achieving blood pressure control, the main preventive strategy.
