Iron deficiency anemia is an old problem that is still common in primary care practice. Once the cause of deficiency is identified, iron replacement therapy is usually required. Unfortunately, some patients do not absorb oral iron well, as illustrated by the case presented here. The authors describe how such a patient was successfully treated with intravenous iron, review the principles of iron metabolism, and discuss selected products for iron replacement therapy.
