Risk factors for drug-induced nephrotoxicity may be patient-related or medication-related. Because decreased renal function is often unsuspected in elderly or asymptomatic patients, overdosing with nephrotoxic agents may occur with resulting renal injury. In this article, Drs Thatte and Vaamonde discuss high-risk situations and offer suggestions for prevention of renal damage.
