A specific cause for noncardiac chest pain has yet to be determined, but this poorly understood disorder produces anxiety in both patients and physicians because of the fear of life- threatening cardiac disease. Dr Minocha stresses the importance not only of ruling out coronary atherosclerosis as a source of the pain but also of establishing a positive diagnosis that will reassure the patient and lessen functional disability.
