Drug therapy for congestive heart failure

Appropriate choices can prolong life

The prognosis in patients with congestive heart failure often can be greatly improved with appropriate drug therapy. Use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors is particularly beneficial in patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Diuretics and digoxin can be added for severe symptoms and obvious congestion. In this article, Dr Sorrentino describes the effects of various medications and makes recommendations for treatment and follow-up.
