Pages 191-200 | Published online: 30 Jun 2015

PREVIEW

Ascites, the collection of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, occurs with a variety of disease states. Because appropriate treatment depends on accurate diagnosis, paracentesis should be performed in every patient with new-onset ascites to determine the cause and detect potential complications. In this article, the authors discuss current methods of managing ascites and emphasize prevention of hospital-acquired spontaneous bacterial peritonitis.
