Alcohol has had an appropriate Jekyll-and-Hyde reputation within the medical field. While alcohol abuse is a significant public health problem, substantial evidence now suggests that moderate alcohol consumption has cardioprotective effects. What, then, should physicians recommend to patients seeking advice about alcohol consumption? In this article, Dr Figueredo discusses factors to consider when making such a recommendation.
