If a simple office test were available to assess the presence and severity of obstructive and restrictive lung disease, wouldn't you use it in your patients who smoke? Such a test has been available for years: spirometry. As Dr Petty explains, spirometry is not used as widely as it should be, especially by primary care providers, who are in the best position to identify early lung cancer and begin treatment before it progresses.
