A diagnosis of terminal illness is like a stone thrown into the pool of a patient's life. The grief that ripples out from that “stone” begins with the diagnosis and continues through the illness and death, affecting the patient, his or her family and friends, and even the caregivers. Distinguishing normal grief from abnormal grief or a mood disorder is an essential skill for family physicians, and open, supportive communication is the most critical management tool.
